FAQ

Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page

Below we have tried to answer the most common questions.

  • Do Ramblers charge for the walks in their programme?
No - all walks are free of charge. When you have been on three walks we will ask you to consider becoming a member of the RA.

  • What do the grades mean in the walks programmes?
These are intended to indicate the difficulty of the walk.
They have both a letter and a number. (eg. C 9)
The number is the length of the walk in miles.
The letter is given as follows:
A - Strenuous, mostly mountains, perhaps including scrambling.
If easier terrain then it will be long.
B - Moderate, for the reasonably fit, but usually visiting the
         mountain tops over 600 m.
C - Moderate, hills and moorland up to 600 m./2000 ft.
    D - Easy, mainly pastoral.
    E - Leisurely,pastoral and normally a half day walk
If you have any questions regarding the difficulty of a walk, such as the existence of and/or number of stiles then contact us.
Please do not choose too strenuous a walk.

  • Do I need any special equipment to go walking?
Generally only suitable footwear. Walks go across fields and over stiles and can be muddy. Stout shoes or light walking boots are recommended on easier walks, but mountain walks need walking boots with ankle support. As we live in Britain it is always advisable to be prepared for rain so a waterproof should be carried. In colder weather a warm hat and gloves may be needed
In winter conditions certain mountain walks may require ice axes and crampons to be carried, with the ability to use them.

  • What else should I take on a walk?
Longer walks usually have breaks for food, so most people like to bring snacks and drinks. A light rucksack is useful for carrying these. The walks leader will always give advice on what to bring. Mountain walks often need extra gear especially in winter.

  • What about safety on walks?
All Ramblers walks are led by experienced walks leaders who will take every precaution to ensure that the walk is safe.
However every walk does contain some element of risk, even if this is just crossing stiles. So care should be taken at all times, as you are responsible for your own safety.
